Striker House History

"Built in the 1880s by Daniel Striker, this Queen Anne-style building was once considered the 'handsomest residence in Hastings.' Born in New York State in 1835, Striker moved as a child with his family to Michigan. He was elected to several offices in Barry County, became a lawyer, and in 1871-75 was elected Michigan secretary of state. Striker was also widely known in banking circles. He died in 1898, and after the death of his wife in 1915 the house became a hospital, later a convalescent home." -Striker House Historic Marker (1971)

After the convalescent home, part of the house was used as an apartment and the lot was split for a gas station. It was later used as a real estate office, but fell into ruin. At one time the house was almost turned into a resturant but that pursuit ended when a liquor license was denied twice. It remained abandoned until the 1990s when it was lovingly turned back into a livable, family home. The beautiful house has changed many hands and has lived many different lives. As of today, it is once again being restored from a state of abandon. The house was left vacant for (at least) the past five years. The elements took their toll on the Striker House and now it is in desperate need of preservation once again.Â
